Multicultural children’s books concept did not appear recently. In my observation it has been around for quite a while, in every place where different ethnicities lived peacefully side by side, appreciating each other’s uniqueness, customs, knowledge and originality.

My personal definition of the word “multicultural”:

It means to respect, appreciate, promote and understand cultural diversity and ethnic heritage.

Multiculturalism refers to the acceptance of multiple ethnic cultures, for practical reasons and/or for the sake of diversity and applied to the demographic make-up of a specific place, usually at the organizational level, e.g. schools, businesses, neighborhoods, cities or nations. In this context, multiculturalists advocate extending equitable status to distinct ethnic and religious groups without promoting any specific ethnic, religious, and/or cultural community values as central.” (from Wikipedia)

Multicultural Children’s Books Online website’s exclusive children’s story and coloring book is Pukaluka the Baby Whale. It comes in English, Chinese and Spanish language, as well as in bilingual Chinese/English and Spanish/English version. At the moment this inspiring and fun story about the sea creatures from around the Islands of Hawaii is being translated into three more languages.
